The brand new Vancouver ComedyFest runs February 16 to the 26 for two weeks at numerous venues with some huge laughs.

Join us for our "Our Opening Night Gala" Thursday, February 16 hosted by none other than star of Knight Rider, Baywatch and Americas Got Talent, David Hasselhoff. "The Hoff" will lead a line up of international comedy stars for "Hoff's World" the opening night of the 2012 Vancouver ComedyFest.

David Hasselhoff; Actor. Singer. Producer. Businessman. Best known for his lead roles as Michael Knight in the popular 1980's US series Knight Rider and as L.A. County Lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in the series Baywatch. Hasselhoff also produced Baywatch for a number of seasons in the 1990's up until 2001 when the series ended with Baywatch Hawaii. Hasselhoff also crossed over to a music career during the end of the 1980's and the early 1990's. He was noted for his performance at the Berlin Wall at New Year's Eve 1989 and enjoyed a short-lived success as a singer primarily in German-speaking Europe.

More recently, Hasselhoff has been involved with talent shows. He was the first celebrity eliminated from the eleventh season of Dancing with the Stars on September 21, 2010. He was also a judge on NBC's America's Got Talent from 2006 to 2009. In 2011 he joined the Britain's Got Talent judging panel, alongside Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Michael McIntyre.

Got to check out Metric this weekend at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. What a great goddamn show. I know this is an obvious comparison, but I swear, Emily Haines is Debbie Harry incarnate (which also doesn't make sense, as Debbie Harry is still alive). The crowd was, unfortunately, fairly quiet for much of the show, but that didn't seem the affect the band's energy at all.

Despite their stupor, the crowd did seem pleased by the end of it. I know I was.

Band of Skulls

Last time I saw Band of Skulls (at the Media Club last year), they hadn't yet put out their first album, but had some buzz behind them and were a lot of fun to watch. They were back in town this weekend, playing a couple of sold-out shows at Venue, so I was curious to see how far they'd come in the interim.

First of all, this band has a pretty good-sized fanbase in Vancouver, judging by the turnout and the energy in the place. They didn't let Granville Street down, either. They do a gritty sort of blues that is reminiscent of the Black Keys, in all the right ways, but with more of a rock edge.

It's worth checking out Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, if you haven't yet.

La Roux

Got the chance to check out La Roux at the Commodore the other night. While La Roux is actually the duo of singer Eleanor Jackson and Ben Langmaid, it's Jackson that gets most of the attention, and rightly so.

Watching a semi-androgynous ginger shake it on stage under strobe lights is a pretty good time. If you get the opportunity, I suggest you take it. La Roux puts out some pretty awesome pop, and their live show is the perfect presentation of their 80s sound.

The Hotmess Olympic Hangover

By now we have all drank the Olympic Kool Aid.

And we have realized that although you may have won a gold medal in drunk cartwheeling, the hangover rhythm is gonna get you...

Olympic sized hangovers require equally Olympic sized solutions!!!

Here are some of my tested favorites:

1. Pedialyte: This is a better option to Gatorade, yup it’s for babies with diarrhea. It has more electrolytes than Gatorade, so it hydrates quicker.

2. Lemon: Puerto Rican's swear by rubbing lemon on armpits as a way to avoid a hangover. The idea is that the lemon prevents sweating, thus helping the body to retain fluid and voila no headaches. I say put one in the double Ceasar you will need 5 minutes after this doesn't work.

3. Grease: Hit up the German or Swiss houses for some schnitzel or cheese. Grease is your friend but in my experience I'd rather go to sleep with a belly of Fritz than try to go looking for it in the morning.

4. Crappy TLC reality show: These won't help your spins but it will make you feel less embarrassed about anything you did the night before. There is no way you can top these people...and they are sober. I think?

5. Coca-Cola: I don't really like pop but this move may save lives for up to 20 minutes. Fizz for the stomach, liquid for the dehydration, and a caffeine/sugar hit to perk you up. Buuuuuut this is very short lived as the consequent crash is going to make matters even worse.

My goal is simple; for everyone to have the same Olympic spirit to persevere as this woman.

John Frusciante has left the Red Hot Chili Peppers...again. The first time it happened was after Blood Sugar Sex Magik, in the early 90s, when he decided to do enough heroin to piss poppy seeds. Now he's gone again but this time it's not about a chemical romance! Here's why in his own words!

Frusciante’s full letter to fans:

“When I quit the band, over a year ago, we were on an indefinite hiatus. There was no drama or anger involved, and the other guys were very understanding. They are supportive of my doing whatever makes me happy and that goes both ways.

To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction. Upon rejoining, and throughout my time in the band, I was very excited about exploring the musical possibilities inherent in a rock band, and doing so with those people in particular. A couple of years ago, I began to feel that same excitement again, but this time it was about making a different kind of music, alone, and being my own engineer.

I really love the band and what we did. I understand and value that my work with them means a lot to many people, but I have to follow my interests. For me, art has never been something done out of a sense of duty. It is something I do because it is really fun, exciting, and interesting. Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.

Sending love and gratitude to you all.”

Zero 7 & Phantogram

From one extreme to another: two weeks ago I was dodging jets of fake blood at GWAR's show. Sunday night I was back at the Commodore, and the atmosphere was refreshingly chill and well-behaved. With six people up on stage, Zero 7 had a nice, full sound, but was perfectly low-key in their signature downtempo way. What an awesome way to enjoy a beer on a Sunday night while not freezing your ass off outside.

Oh, and I should mention their opening act, Phantogram. I first came across their song "When I'm Small" a few weeks ago, and was stoked to learn that they'd be opening for Zero 7. They're pretty tight, be sure to check out that song on their Myspace.

GWAR

I can't believe I'm still alive. I made my way to the GWAR show at the Commodore tonight, my heart heavy in my chest, my camera wrapped in plastic. I had never been to one of their shows, but I had heard legend of men dressed as gods from other galaxies spraying the liquified souls of dead groupies into the thirsty maws of their minions.

That is more or less what went down. And it was awesome! As a photographer, this wasn't so much a show I was shooting as a holocaust I was trying not to take shrapnel from. As I cowered under the shadow of Beefcake the Mighty (the bass player, pictured at top), ducking below the stage whenever the blood cannon (above) was aimed in my direction, I asked myself: is this what I got into concert photography for? And the answer was "fuck no," but probably the reason I'll keep doing it. It was the most hilarious and fun show I've ever been to.

RIP Haydain Neale

Canadian music lost a true class act this week.

Haydain Neale, the frontman for the group Jacksoul died Sunday from lung cancer.

With the Nov. 3 release of a new Jacksoul single "Lonesome Highway" and an album of new material, Soulmate, slated for Dec. 1, fans couldn't help but think the Hamilton-born Neale was on the upswing.

His family has always been optimistic, but tightlipped, about his condition and intensive rehabilitation.

In a press release about the production of the new tunes – written, and seemingly recorded, prior to his accident – Neale says: "It takes me more time now, but I still orchestrate the room.

Sadly, Jacksoul's fifth album will now be the posthumous legacy of its gravelly-voiced frontman. Relatives announced late Monday that Neale died in hospital on Sunday after a seven-month battle with lung cancer.

He will be missed.

Sorry I'm just not a fan of freaks. I'm not talking about the freaks immediately below either. I actually like them.

No, I'm talking about real freaks. Like deformed freaks. Inbred freaks. The kind that live under the stairs or in The Ozarks or in the attic.

It started when I saw Pet Sematary (how the movie title is spelled) when I was a kid and was introduced to Zelda- the deformed sister who puked up porridge in the attic. Since then my fear has escalated to the point where I can't even look at people with slightly misshapen heads on account they may be the product of inter-cousin relations.

I couldn't even watch The Smurfs because I thought they were members of the "Blue Fugates," an inbred Kentucky hill clan who suffered from a rare genetic blood disorder that made their skin look blue. Like check it out...Pappa Smurf or Blue Fugate...which is which?!?!?

Look, if you're worried about giving birth to some sort of ungodly abomination here are some simple steps you can take:

1) Don't bone your attractive cousin. NO MATTER HOW ATTRACTIVE. This one is crucial.

2) Don't live in or around The Ozark Mountains. According to the movie Deliverance Don't take a canoe trip through them either.

3) Don't drop LSD or smoke crack while pregnant.

4) Don't visit the Island of Dr. Moreau.

5) Stop looking at your attractive cousin! SERIOUSLY! COME ON!!!!

Stick to this and you should be safe.

Oh, one more thing. This is the only freak-related thing I like. It's the song Hunted by a Freak by Mogwai. I AM still afraid of the title though as it's my worst nightmare.

I liked it about as much as the surprise tonsil hockey you played with the keyboard player. Do us all a favour and rub one out before you get on stage, no one wants to see that.

I love Matthew Good like the abusive father I never had. I think most people know him for his 90s hits, but the guy has put out a lot of material since then (seven albums or EPs this decade), and he's one of the most underrated songwriters there is, in my opinion. Now, trust me when I say I mean this as a compliment: there's nothing I want to listen to more when I'm feeling like hanging myself than some Matt Good. The best cure for depression is to wallow in it, I always say. The show last night at The Centre was nothing less than I expect from one of his shows, and I've seen a lot of them: the music (especially the vocals) were tight as fuck, Matt cracked some jokes, and the crowd yelled the names of obscure songs. Fortunately, he is one artist who actually does reach deep into the back catalogue with frequency, so everyone leaves the room happy.

Paranormal Activity wins Most Profitable Film of All Time

This movie scared the pants off me... Seriously.

I went to see a big show matinee at the Arclight dome thinking if I saw it during the daytime it would be less scary. I forgot it's always dark in the theater.

Now... I'm a wuss but I thought this movie was the scariest thing ever... Blair Witch project in your bedroom. It starts small and builds with the right amount of shaky camera and things that bump in the night.

Some people didn't find it as heart stopping as I did but can't stand it when people are too cool for a good scare. ANYHOOO Paranormal Activity which was apparently shot for like 15 grand has now made over 65 million making it the most profitable movie of all time. Taking the number one spot from Blair witch. ET is still in the top 5 after 27 years.

If you haven't seen it go check it out. The director is already working on his next film about area 51. I can't wait. I love Halloween.

You like Giant alien crabs attacking stadiums? I think it's kind of cool and so does U2.. the 360 tour hit BC place this past week and it was well, a typical U2 extravaganza.. Let me lay it out for you quick and easy,

Band enters stage, band dances around really badly, mediochre light show, very cool video screens, lots of philanthropy, a message to save the imprissioned leader of Burma, more bad dancing, children walk on the stage in a circle for One Love, 2 encores and the show is done..

58,000 people exiting the stadium and roam the streets of Vancouver.. nothing special, nothing bad, just typical U2.

GERMS! Whatever happened to the natural process of healing? It seems to me that whatever created women & men; made sure that our bodies could self medicate and combat outside sources! It makes me angry that nowadays when we get sick, we immediately run to our kitchen cabinet and pull out 10 different boxes of laboratory infused chemicals that will temporarily make symptoms go away or we go and get vaccinations, which is ABSURD! Why would you want to inject poisonous disease into your body, isn't that what were trying to avoid to begin with??? Let's get to the real source people! I mean have we really gotten so lazy that we don't and won't try to EAT HEALTHIER, EXERCISE, SLEEP MORE, and STRESS LESS! It's obvious to me that the 21st century has more disease now then ever! Our ancestors must be laughing at us and rolling in there graves. I get sad when I think that our next generation is gonna look like a bunch of pale germ phobic zombies trying to find the next object to "Purell"! GERMS are good for you! Our bodies need constant challenge or they get lazy and that's how we get sick. If our immune system functions properly then so do we, but we gotta give our body what it needs to function! (LONG SIGH) NATURE gave us what we need! I hope you got the point!

I haven't written on my other blog THE TALL AND HANDSOME CLUB for a while but I'm back with a whopper, so I'm posting it here on HOTMESS too!!

What better way to reintroduce the world to all things TALL AND HANDSOME than by blogging, in celebration of Halloween, about the tallest and most handsome monster of them all-Frankenstein. Oh, his handsomeness is debatable you say?!? I beg to differ. His was a uniqueness all his own. His green, leathery face, full of weathered lines and undeniable character are reminiscent of a latter-day Clint Eastwood-meets-Kermit the Frog-on-steroids.

On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, early Celtic and European people thought that they would encounter spirits if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

That was then.

Nowadays people are a lot less concerned about evil spirits and demonic possession and more concerned about GETTING LAID. Obviously Halloween had to evolve. The masks got a little less scary. The skirts, a LOT shorter. The boobs, faker. Suddenly, KABLAM, it's 2009 and being a horny, hard-bodied skank on Halloween is all the rage. No wait. Scratch that. IT'S A RELIGION.

The Sounds and Foxy Shazam

Last night The Sounds kicked and jumped and rocked and danced and spit and smoked and drank and yelled and called us motherfuckers. The audience loved it. I was luke warm about the set. While stand out track Living in America was awesome, the rest of the songs kind of sounded the same.

The real story of the night was the opening act FOXY SHAZAM who were like a bunched of abused caged, animals that only get released before they go on stage. From Cincinatti, OH the band consists of two lead singers, one trumpet, bass, guitar, drums and keys. AND THEY ARE BATSHIT CRAZY. One guy was constantly somersaulting around the stage and telling the audience he was "going to get to you before you get to me" if they tried to kill him. The set ended pleasantly with the bass player going crazy, beating up one of the lead singers and very realistically pretending to snap his neck. Once again I believe in Rock n Roll.

Say what you want about Bono and his egomaniacal posturing, the fact of the matter is U2 IS the biggest band on the planet and has been for like, what, two decades?!?! I know their latest album didn't get much love here in North America, because of this critics have deemed it a commercial flop, but last nights live broadcast of U2 playing the Rosebowl was proof that they are still loved by millions the world over. Since it's initial broadcast last night at 8:30-ish PT the streaming concert has continuously been replayed.

It truly was a unique and cool undertaking on the band's part, marred only by the incessant, tactless tweets of some that read " MADONNA IS DEAD." She's not. People can be losers. Enjoy the whole damn concert right here!!!

Halloween Scare Failed

So I thought it might be fun, being in the Halloween season and all to hit up a midnight screening of Paranormal Activity, hyped up to be one of the scariest movies in a while, I left wanting a refund. This film is all hype and no delivery. Its starts off slow and kinda makes you want to vommit with the stupid hand held camera style, fyi we get it, you want it to look real, but no one enjoys getting a headache. Then it has the entire film, building building but not really getting anywhere, a lot of shots of people sleeping... exciting stuff here people. I won't let the cat out of the bag if you do plan on watching the movie, but seriously don't waste your time, Blair witch kicks this movies ass hands down. Happy Haunting Demons.

It takes a profoundly life altering experience to make to make a person change their entire belief system. I had that experience last night at Evil Dead- The Musical. Like any average white male Canadian who was baptized in a United Church in small town Ontario, I used to believe in the inherent goodness of mankind. I used to believe in the glory of a higher power. I used to believe in the all enveloping love of a divine deity whose son sacrificed himself for our sins and has 14% alcohol, red wine blood.

Now, I just believe in EVIL.

It just looks way more fun. Evil Dead-The Musical is hilarious replete with the characters, campiness, sarcasm, blood and demons from the movies of the same name that inspired it. The dialogue/ lyrics that poke fun at the stereotypes of the horror movie genre are bang on and side-splittingly, gut wrenchingly, chainsaw-to-the-brain funny. It makes a horrific quadruple homicide in a lonely cabin in the woods seem like a really good time! And what's wrong with that?! Nothing.

I'm totally on board! I'm into fake blood as a fashion statement! Give me the entire Marilyn Manson music catalogue! Buy me a Ouija board for my birthday, because EVIL is here to sta....

It's hard not to love Martina Sorbara and the catchy-as-fuck songs of her band, Dragonette. They rocked Venue last night to the right kind of crowd: the kind that likes to sip a Bacardi and cola and shake its collective ass. They opened up with "I Get Around", their first single and probably still my favourite song of theirs, and took it from there. It was an early show, a fine way to kick off my debaucherous weekend.

You're in a dark theater with a red curtain back drop lit by a string of those Christmas icicle lights and some bare light bulbs. There is an open faced piano on the stage with cords and electronics coming out of it, drums, like 15 guitars and... a xylophone?

You're here to see Jon Brion for the first time at Largo in Los Angeles. You have been waiting for this day for a long time because everyone is blown away by this guy.

The theater is humming with anticipation as sound check kinda goes down and the host announces the show.

Then this tall lanky dude, who looks sort of like Jay Brown, comes out in a plaid suit rockin some serious bangs. He check his gear and steps up to the microphone.

Jon: "You guys got that cold going around? I do... whatever, let's play some fucking music."

Then for the next hour and half he proceeds to blow your brains out of your ears.

This is a one man concert. He goes from Cheap Trick to Bowie. From "Come on get Happy" to "Beast of Burden". He goes from wicked guitar solo to piano solo to laying down loops on drums, piano and video to create full blown concert tracks that I can't put into words. When he isn't sure where to go next he calls out for requests and will play and sing any track you can come up with. It's beautiful, powerful and makes you feel stupid. This mans brain does things that most brains can't do. This is a must see show and for $25 bones it's the best musical bang for your buck you can get these days.

It's official... Minutes ago history was made! Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was chosen to host the summer 2016 olympic and Paralympic games! Rio De Janeiro is the first South American country to ever host the games. The other countries shortlisted were Madrid, Tokyo, Rio, and Chicago. Chicago seems to be taking it hard (which is where President Obama is from)... WHY?!?! In my opinion Chicago should be happy they avoided the craziness... People don't seem to realize that profit is rarely made for cities hosting the olympics and the citizens are stuck paying these ridiculous expenses for years!

Vintage sent me the movie Whip it. This movie is to husky white trash girls as Slap Shot was to scrawny white trash boys.

Starring Ellen Page, it's a charming coming of age story with roller skates, fishnets, and bloody noses. She's 22 but plays a very convincing 17. I totally got a semi. Does that make me a pedophile or just a pervert? The movie is full of girls skating and falling and fighting but sadly, there was no SYTYCD style vagina flashing. I think I'm just a pervert.

On the Whip It scale, where 1=the dog breed and 10=the aerosol dairy game, I give this movie a solid 7.63 (a Devo reference would have resulted in a much higher score).

Late Night Letterman Confession.

Last night David Letterman told a story to his studio audience and the world because he was the target of a $2 million extortion attempt.

In the video Letterman admits that he has had sexual relations with different members of his staff.

The extortionists have been identified as Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien.

Actually, the extortionist is 51-year-old Robert Halderman, an employee of 48 Hours and the boyfriend of Stephanie Birkitt. Stephanie is or was Dave's assistant and she reportedly had an affair with him years before he was married or over the past 23 years while he was dating his now wife... the story changes depending on what you read.

This wreaks of all kinds of scandal and I guess we will soon see if the confession hurt or helped him.

What's the real "creepy thing" of this video? Telling a story about having sex with your employees to people who laugh and clap loudly.

Pearl Jam put on a hell of a live show. If you're a fan it's like a spiritual experience. It's rare to see a band sell out an arena in this day and age and it's even more rare to have the entire place sing along to the majority of their songs. I thought I was sick of songs like Alive and Small Town until I heard Pear Jam perform them in 2009 with the good people of Vancouver as back up singers!

They played a lot of new stuff from their recently released album Backspacer. The great thing about a Pearl Jam show is that they'll play new songs, they'll play some hits, some covers AND songs that fans have come to love over the years without hesitation. NO TWO SHOWS ARE THE SAME.

On October 16th Where the Wild Things Are roars into theaters as Spike Jonze brings a child’s imagination to life on the screen.

Lead singer of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs Karen O and The Kids are behind the official soundtrack that is blowing up on the internets today.

“The Kids” = Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase who are bandmates in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Oscar Michel (Gris Gris), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska) and an amazing childrens choir.

Im not really one for save the anything campaigns, not that they are bad or good I just don't usually jump on band wagons very often. Recently I went to see the film "The Cove" and it was a pretty amazingly made film, and definitely had a strong message. It's always difficult when you see films like this to really know if your getting the whole story because they are usually created from only one point of view. I think regardless of how you look at it, this film shines a lot of light on a shady side of Japan thats really quite disturbing. Anyway it's a great film that you most definitely should go watch if nothing more that to keep it in the theatres so more people get the chance to see it for themselves.

Muffins.

You seriously suck. You have just as many calories as flipping cake but you're not cake. You're a muffin. You're a wolf dressed as a sheep that secretly glues slices of black forest ham to my thighs when I'm sleeping. I hate you muffin. Yeah, you're pretty tasty when you get out of the oven and hook-up with butter, but I'm sick of your charade. There's a reason no one wants to put icing on you, and it's because we all know you're a liar.

Cupcakes.

You are awesome, you're cute and you taste great and are pretty much synonymous with things like kittens and rainbows. You don't have to pretend to be something your not. Why even bother trying to be a fake healthy breakfast food when you could be invited to tea parties? You make me want to wear fancy hats and buy pink dresses from Betsy Johnson. You never let it go to your head either, you are perfect cupcake. I love you.

Fame is Lonely

I just saw Fame at a theatre in Fort St John. For those of you that don't know where that is, I will provide some directions.

Drive North. Very North. Then turn Right. Very Right. Pro-Life, Anti-Gay Right. Continue past the High School with the Daycare Program. Do not graduate.

The theatre in this town is in an almost vacant mall. The other stores consist of an Orange Julius and a Stripper Blanket store. Coincidentally, the only other people in the movie theatre were a gay dude and a pregnant stripper.

Fame is essentially High School Musical meets America's Best Dance Crew with a little bit of Degrassi thrown in for good measure. It was mildly entertaining; however, if I was anywhere else in the world, I would probably have done something else.

I guess I'm not really the target market. There was a New Moon preview and I only tittered and squealed a little bit. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go buy a stripper blanket.
