Rock the Bells

Hotmess hit up Rock the Bells on a sweltering Saturday at Deer Lake Park. The day was all about reverence for hip-hop, and a certain funny smell in the air. The lineup included legends like RZA and Nas, and had surprise appearances by the likes of B-Real from Cypress Hill. Throughout the day, artists would do classic verses of other rappers, like when Common dropped some Pharcyde and Snoop lyrics, to the delight of the crowd (oh yeah, he did "Rapper's Delight" too). The whole thing felt like a shrine to a genre that seems to be a bit maligned of late, and it was refreshing.

LA Roux tonight on Hotmess!

So are all probably aware that we are big fans of La Roux on Hotmess. Tonight the greatness collides! Vintage will be catching up with our beloved former 'Ginger of the Week' who I was lucky enough to catch in concert a few nights ago.

They did not dissapoint, in fact I think they were one of those bands better live! Her voice is incredibly powerful which is good, because there were a lot of hipster lesbians with their coif in her signature massive side bang singing along at the top of their lungs.

Check out their touring schedule here and make sure you don't miss the ginger greatness if they're playing near you!

LMFAO at Gossip

The crowd was unruly, the band was an hour late, but once they were up there they got shit going. They gave a lot of love to Vancity, substituting the nickname/credit union into their song "I'm in Miami Bitch", to much applause from their Gossiping minions.

Hotmess landed an interview with Sky Blu! You have to listen! Party execution 101 with hotmess and Sky Blu !

Photos by Graham Cook.

I Love you, Kelly Kapowski!!!!

Blink 182

Vintage sent The Bruce and I to review the blink 182 show.

On the way over we met some girls in the park and they gave us some of their peach cider. After a couple pulls from the 2 litre, The Bruce casually mentions he hasn't seen blink 182 since thier first Warped tour.

Girl 1: "Oh my god! You guys are seniors!"
The Bruce: "It was only 1999"
Girl 2: "I was 8"
The Bruce: "Bye ladies. Your braces are sexy, but even I have limits"

About 10 steps into GM Place we met a girl standing by herself. She was waiting for her date to come out of the restroom. After some brief negotiating, I proceeded to lick both her legs from ankle to thigh. She was tight, tanned, and salty. This cost me $2.

Guys, don't leave your sluts unattended.

We walked into the show and found some seats; not our seats, but some seats. It was there that we met two fine ladies from the Black Orchid Agency (aka Hookers). I don't really remember what I said to them, but I got pushed down the stairs and rolled into a group of girls from somewhere in the Valley. After some quick introductions the girls told me I was pretty even though I was old, and began to take pictures of me. A lot of pictures.

It aint easy being tall, good-looking, and white.

That's when I figured it out. Everyone at this show was ugly. Beautiful People are the new visible minority. Our numbers are dwindling. Stick with me Hot Messy ones, there is strength in numbers.

Oh, also, Blink 182 put on an amazing show for the kiddies with the best stage setup I have ever seen. They played all the hits for all the white kids passively swaying back and forth in the "mosh pit".

It was a good time had by all. I'm pretty banged up from my trip down the stairs though. I'm walking with a limp like an old school pimp or real OG.

Why our site looks like a piece of shit right now...

Dear Sir or Madame,

You are likely visiting this site because you are one of the GAGILLION Hotmess fans worldwide who have had multiple eargasms while listening to our podcast/ radio show. You probably also love to fuck around at work or school and read our blog. This is great for us and we thank you. If your boss or teacher gives you shit, grab that stapler on your desk and hit them in the knee cap. When they buckle, tear off the arm of your chair and give them a HELLO upper-cut. Finish off with a flurry to the solar plexus. They'll get the message.

You COULD be visiting this site by accident because you thought this was a Sam Sparrow fan page, a Cobra Starship fan page or even a porn site ( if you thought it was porn I'll apologize right now for letting you down), but this is less likely.

Regardless, you're here and are probably asking yourself, "What the shit-fuck is this bullshit? This page looks more lame than my leper horse with a broken leg."

First of all, put that horse out of it's misery and secondly the reason this page looks this way right now is because we needed to do some tests while we build our NEW IMPROVED WEBSITE.

It's going to be SICK so please have patience.  We're going to have merchandise and contest sections and a whole whack load of new cool features to help make this a more interactive experience for all!

YOU my friend are a part of an organization of hot messy people. YOU ARE ALL MEMBERS OF WWW.HOTMESS.ORG

Cordially yours,
Jay

Ever watch Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations? No? Well you should!!

It's a travel & food show on the Travel Channel where "Tony" vists places all over the world to try their local cuisine and culture BUT it's so much more then that! In the one hour show he manages to cram anything and everything on whatever city he is in that is food, culture and oh yes cocktails, there is definetly no lack of drinking on this show on Tony's part.

He also has a fondness for street meat and showcases at least once in every city where you can get a high quality, delicious and most importantly freshly prepared quick street food.

Egyptian Breakfast:

His emmy award winning show has been running for a few season now but you can definitely catch reruns on the travel channel. He is an extremely charismatic and colorful man who has that NY attitude of telling it like it is and no holds bar, his description of San Paolo: it's like L.A. threw up on NY!

By far his best episode was in Beirut when the Israel-Lebanon conflict broke out. Despite having filmed only one restaurant before fighting began, Bourdain's producers compiled the Beirut footage into a episode. Uncharacteristically, the episode included footage of both Bourdain and his production staff, and included not only their initial attempts to film the episode, but also their firsthand encounters with Hezbollah supporters, their days of waiting for news with other expatriates in a Beirut hotel, and their eventual escape aided by a "cleaner" (unseen in the footage) whom Bourdain dubbed "Mr. Wolfe." The episode was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2007

I highly recommend this show it's a welcoming break from all the other crap on TV, not to mention you get great tips if you should ever feel inclined to visit any one of the cities profiled.

Fifty Dead Men Walking

At first “Fifty Dead Men Walking” seems similar to a lot of movies you’ve already seen but then it Karate chops you with an Irish genuineness you weren’t expecting.

Martin McGartland's 1997 autobiography of the same name, the story follows a street hustler from Ireland caught between the IRA and the British agendas in the late 80’s.

But don’t expect all the lame Hollywood flare- it’s gritty, tough, and makes an effort to accurately portray Northern Ireland at the time- thick Irish accents included.

It doesn’t pick a side but instead focuses on the desperation of the people stuck in an unwinnable situation.

Jim Sturgess is so good in this movie I almost forgot that Ben Kingsley is the other leading man.

I heart all things true story and documentary like so if that isn’t your thing then it probably won’t appeal to you in the same way.

But if you are check out da wiki. It goes into further detail on the story but also the events that happened after the film.

"Fifty Dead Men Walking" opens July 31. Go see it!

I would go again but only if the guy who sat behind me and stunk like pickles isn't invited.

Snoop Dogg & Friends

Average age of Snoop Dogg Fan: 15
Average age of Snoop Dogg Song: 15

Seems like a good fit to me. That is until he goes into Aint No fun and half of the kids had no idea what was going on. Confusion compounded when Snoop was joined by the Lady of Rage for a throwback of the track Afro Puffs, made famous by the Above the Rim Soundtrack.

Later Snoop asked everyone to put their twos up (two fingers for Tupac) while he performed an extended version of Hail Mary. The poignancy of the moment was clearly lost on the suburban tube top hotties.

Finally the crowd was reconnected with a jolly jumping good time cover of House of Pain's Jump Around.

Oh, I almost forgot! Akon casually walked out on stage and performed I wanna Love You. That was pretty awesome.

After losing a few points for the Liberace style microphone, Snoop Dogg and his pals score a solid 8.92 pounds out of 10.

Mickey Avalon looks like Beardo

The lady in charge of the media told me this was Mickey Avalon.

I realize it is not but she was having none of it.
Consequently, when Mickey Avalon did come on, I was not allowed to photograph it or even hear it.

This has been your Mickey Avalon review.

Good News Monday

It's important to try to combat your Mondays with so much good news that you can seamlessly summersalt into Tuesdays warm less, work-like glow.

To make that summersault a dive roll- check this out!

It looks like Amazon's top selling Wolves T-shirt and the You Tube keyboard cat "made nice" to create this glorious cotton offspring.

Apparently, this guy on Threadless is pumping these babies out like a TLC show (Jon&Kate Plus 8, 18 Kids and Counting, Table for 12 - pick your poison).

In other miracle news, the most hideous shoes in the world may soon be no more. The most surprising part is that these foam clogs sold 100 million pairs! How?

Maxim even named Crocs one of the “10 Worst Things to Happen to Men in 2007.” In 07, Crocs made a profit of $168.2 million. Last year, they lost $185.1 million.

Somehow I have a feeling we will still be seeing these around... If you are a Croc offender please read the public service announcement below and immediately dispose of them.

Finally, Kid Sister has announced the title and official release date of her long-anticipated debut album.

Ultraviolet, isn't due out until October but here's a leak that will keep your 'Right Hand Hi' until the weekend comes back.

Kid Sister Right Hand Hi

So Blondtron Will Like Me

I need to pick myself up one of these fantastic gizmo's and then Blondtron will be my friend, or yours.

Things you Want

I want this bed, its pretty freaking awesome.. I also want you to listen to our podcast, cuz again it's pretty freakin awesome ! Hope you are all rockin a fantastic monday.

No Doubt is 'HELLA GOOD'

No Doubt played the Vancouver scene last night, July 18th, and blew the roof off GM Place. My ears were fed delicious hits from the California native band from opening the show with "Spiderwebs" to ending it with "Sunday Morning", which happen to be my 2 favorite songs. The energy was contagious and everyone was standing up, jumping, and singing along the entire 90 minute show (it was one big sweat fest). Gwen Stefani was one fierce performer (and can I mention that after having 2 kids her body looks tighter and hotter then ever, she's definitely not 'just a girl')! No Doubt they know how to entertain a crowd, HOLY LOTS OF AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION... I was also blown away on how cool it was that during the encore presentation they brought out both opening acts Bedouin Soundclash, and Paramore (PS: they seriously ROCK) to sing along! Needless to say, my "Tragic Kingdom" faze came back to me like in a dream! I had an amazing experience and still love them as much as my good ol' High School days!
Check out the official website for more tour info:
www.nodoubt.com

If you missed out on the concert here are a few hits you'll enjoy!

Peace,
Cindy :-)

Orang-ooooo-nice-tans and PCP

I don't need to say anything else

Where Art Thou Chromeo?

It's been a while since I've seen their "keyboards grow legs so they could walk it out".

Where did they walk to? I've missed them. They never call...They never write.

It seems they have been busy following in the foot steps of bands like Four Tet, Booka Shade, Hot Chip and Annie,(and many others)to create their own installment of the DJ Kicks Compilation

While there’s no tracklisting available yet, the mix is expected in early October.

In the meantime, you can grab a download of the Eagles ""I Can't Tell You Why" cover HERE - after your sign up for email updates on the release.

And make sure you grab an icepack before you listen to Hotmess tonight... it's so hot your ears might melt.

Stache Envy

Yes it's true, I am a 28 year old male, and sad but true I can not grow an thick luscious mustache, I can rock a beard like the rest of them, but the mustache still fails leaving me envious of the Burt Reynolds and Tom Sellecks of the world.

But guess what, I no longer need to have stache envy, great thinkers in this world have solved my little dilema. Designer Avril Loreti has made it possible for you to choose from four styles of mustache hankies. From the dirty pirate look

to a sophisticated Parisian look,

you can decide how to transform your face while you eat your meal(Or blow your nose). Yah to creative thinking..

If you don't die laughing at this, then there is something wrong with you.

One of the Downsides of Twitter..... I know there are many.

Jonah Hill has a Twitter impersonator, so if you follow him it's not really him. Some kid in Alaska has been posing as him on Twitter and causing trouble for the actor becasue the prankster made him sound like a complete douche to other celebrities...... I know its kinda funny but it's also not cool to wreck someone's rep.

Here's one of the exchanges that went down:

Exchange between fake Hill and Marlee Matlin, the deaf actress from West Wing:
Marlee Matlin... tweets that she loved Hill in Superbad. JonahHill_Jew replies, "How funny could it of been when you can't hear it?"

LOL Oh boy!

Here's a clip of Jonah talking about it on Letterman.

Tear

Sometimes you just have to laugh, yes Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo broke up, and to get just a little more out PR out of the whole thing big T made himself a little video and tossed it up on the wonderful intraweb..

Funny or not? You tell us

Movie Anthems

We can all vow and say that EVERYONE LOVES music and movies, which is why 'HOTMESS' is the best blog EVER, which is why they go HAND in HAND! When we think of movies, somehow, immediately a song made popular by a certain movie pops into our heads. Some movies even helped bring oldies back to life and made popular with today's youth! And it also makes for a great road trip game

So here's my TOP 10 songs from movies, plenty more where that came from... (in no particular order):

1- Simple Minds 'Don't you forget about me'- The Breakfast Club
2- Ray Parker Jr's 'Ghostbusters'- Ghostbusters
3- Bonnie Tyler's 'I need a Hero'- Footloose
4- Moby's 'Porcelain'- The Beach
5- Huey Lewis and the News 'The Power of Love'- Back to the Future
6- Iggy Pop's 'Lust for Life'- Transpotting
7- Kenny Loggins 'Danger Zone'- Top Gun
8- Bryan Adam's '(Everything I do) I do It For You'- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
9- MIA's 'Paper Planes'- Slumdog Millionaire
10- Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock and Roll'- Risky Business

Risky Business

If you haven't heard of these movies... RENT THEM! and if you haven't heard these song... DOWNLOAD THEM!

2012- the best disaster movie of all time or effects heavy piece of shit?!?!?

When I saw the original trailer for this movie I was blown away. You know the one where the monk is ringing a bell on a mountain top and then a giant wave comes crashing over the Himalayas and everyone is like- WHAT THE SHIT?!?!

Now I see THIS trailer ....and I see that it's brought to us by the guy who made Independace Day and I'm having a hard time NOT believing that it's going to be a blustery piece of shit. I hope not.

I wish someone would take a premise like this and stop including the fomulaic "one man must save the world" storyline that we keep seeing rehashed.

Will this be the best disaster movie of all time or another special effects heavy piece of garbage?

We'll see.

SLIM JIM CHAOS

The only Slim Jim plant in the U.S. exploded last month because of a natural gas leak and no Slim Jims have been made since then.

I thought those only existed in random Mohawk and Husky gas stations but the NY Post says the shortage is causing hoarding and panic everywhere... mostly with truckers? Just guessing.

Their article "Where's the Beef? Slim Jim Factory Can't 'Meat'Production Needs" says that "like the infamous "Seinfeld" episode, in which Elaine begins hoarding the Sponge after the female contraceptive is taken off the market, analysts are bracing for a big summer Slim Jim run."

There is such a thing as a Slim Jim analyst? Please tell me it's Macho Man Randy Savage.

The company who makes the product,ConAgra, is rumored to make as many as 500 million of those salty bastards every year! That equals $250 million in sales annually!

ConAgra said it won’t return to full Slim Jim production until the fall. I say a mouth full of beer and Beef Jerky will get you through the drought.

Crisis averted. Phew.

My Oldie Movie Picks of the Week

I must admit that I am a huge fan of older movies, but not "Gone with the Wind" old... Here are a few of my all time favorites, if you haven't seen them then get your butt to the nearest blockbuster and rent' em... and if you've already seen them well, watch'em again... they're timeless classics!

1- Interview with the Vampire (An outstanding cast and one of Tom Cruise's best!)

2- Back to the Future (The whole trilogy is amazing, but the first still blows my mind!)

3- Groundhog Day (Bill Murray at his best, and what an original concept)

4- The Game (You'll never know what the F$%k is going on till the end...)

Let us know what some of your favorites oldies are...

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head played the Media Club tonight and what the fuck, Natalie Portman isn't in the fucking band? First time that joke's been made?

I had heard their debut album before and they seemed to be running a hipster awareness campaign that I wanted to resist at first. But their songs are fun and their show was too. They had platters of fresh fruit that they passed out to people in the front rows. How friendly! And their music is just catchy as hell and about great things like tandem showering and tilt-a-whirls. I want to stay young forever!

If you missed it, check out our audio interview with Dave Price from the band!

Infected Mushroom

The only previous encounter I've had with infected mushroom required a trip to the clinic and a cycle of antibiotics to forget. Last night at the Commodore was a much better experience.

When an artist bio states "Israeli Psycho Trance Duo" you pretty much know what you're in for. Or so I thought...

Turns out Infected Mushroom is a four-piece band ripping out super fast beats and killer guitar riffs. I've never seen so many people on the dance floor. I've also never seen so many people line up to use the stalls in the men's room.

Green Day

I think it's safe to say I underestimated Green Day. They played Vancouver last night and from the first note it was epic. They hit the stage like a bunch of GIANT LIZARDS that had escaped from their cages and were bent on destroying the city... WITH ROCK!
By the third song, their new hit "Know Your Enemy," they had the whole floor of GM Place (Vancouver hockey arena) bouncing higher than a frog on a pogo stick on the Moon! Canadian audiences are usually pretty tame so kudos to you, Green Day.
The show had tons of pyro and fireworks and a drunk guy in a rabbit suit. GO SEE GREEN DAY LIVE.

in the early eighties when there were no cell phones, no internet, no kiddie sex allegations, when Michael Jackson and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (HE'S THE KID IN THE RED LEATHER JACKET)danced for cola products.

RIP MJ

We've just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50.

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.

We're told one of the staff members at Jackson's home called 911.

La Toya ran in the hospital sobbing after Jackson was pronounced dead.

NOTE: It appears TMZ was the first to break this story and now CTV, Newsweek, CNN and many other reputable news outlets are reporting the same thing.

DJ Rhiannon is quickly building a reputation both here and abroad for sweeping the floor with hot bangers like this.

Check her out here before she heads off to Mexico. She's opening for The Disco Villains on August 1st @ The Modern. http://www.myspace.com/djrhiannon

In the words of Jay Awesome.... Holy fucking shitballs WHAT THE FUCK!!!!

Parents this is why you DO NOT let your kids play World of Warcraft day in and day out. They end up loosing touch with reality, getting no exercise, and have zero social skills.

This kid flips his lid when his mom cancels his World of Warcraft account. Hey mom, good move if your kid is this upset over losing his gaming rights chances are he has nothing else going for himself in life. Get the kid enroled in some outdoor sports, definetly a better place for him to channel all that energy.

Perez Hilton gets BOOM BOOM POW from Black Eyed Peas

The MuchMusic Video Awards is arguably Toronto's wildest party. They shut down Queen St. and shit just gets silly. Apparently it got too silly last night for Perez Hilton and the Black Eyed Peas. A bunch of shit was said and blah blah blah Perez gets knocked the fuck out. it was only a matter of time.

You know how I know you're gay? You weren't at Coldplay last night.

I'll admit that I've always thought Coldplay's music was a little "soft."
I was convinced that Chris Martin was going to release a solo album called " Loafer Lightener LTD." So believe me when I say I wasn't that pumped to go to the concert last night, but the tickets were free so what the hell, right? Plus I had just finished interviewing Gary from Snow Patrol who opened for Coldplay. He's funny as hell. You will be able to hear my Snow Patrol interview on Hotmess next week!
I digress.
Last night I went to see Coldplay and holy fucking shitballs they put on an amazing live show. Not even a show...it was an event. It was everything a concert should be- dynamic, entertaining, professional, fun, funny, loud and surprising.
The most surprising thing of all was the fact that they actually rocked! I know! What?!?!?!?!
Yeah, they re-worked some of their old tracks (like the kick ass techno version of the song Talk) and songs like Violet Hill, Yellow and Politik were loud and powerful as shit.

There's definitely a reason these guys are so popular.
Some of their songs still suck mashed potatoes and gravy through a straw though.....

MIMING IS COOL AGAIN!

Okay fine, miming has never been cool.

In an attempt to one-up the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft has come up with a new interface for the Playstation 3, the interface is.... well, no interface at all. Project Natal is full body scanner that tracks your movements and voice so that you become the controller.

It's in the computer!
This just plain freaks me out. People already look stupid playing Wii. Imagine how everyone is going to look now? Well you don't have to imagine, just watch their promo video.

You know how you always think people are talking to themselves when they have a bluetooth in? Picture looking in your neighbours window to this. THE WORLD IS NOT READY. Their are still places in Canada that don't get the internet! I don't get cell service on the train! I still have a flip phone and own a vehicle that requires The Club!

And the scan in feature? What the? The only way I can see myself getting one of these fancy thing-a-ma-jiggers is if I can scan in Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from True Blood and have my way with him.

If "The Island of Dr. Moreau" were a porno...

Sometimes there's so much love in the air that you can't help but become a character in a Barry White song. Guess what, it's the same for all animals!
When the getting's good, the good get grindin' on whatever and whoever they can get their dirty paws or hooves or wings or talons or hands or flippers on......regardless of what kind of unholy abominations might be created in the process!!!!!
WARNING-DON'T LOOK AT THIS IF YOU LIVE IN A RED STATE.

Facercise

"The world's foremost authority on facial exercises" (and possibly the only authority?) Carol Maggio, has been promoting her Facercise regime for so long that she still credits Geraldo Rivera as one of the talk shows she's appeared on.

Carol pitches that she has a loyal celebrity clientele base and that her facial exercises will leave you looking younger, tighter and... like Tyra Banks on acid?

Wednesday should start with a laugh and if this doesn't do it- it's time to go back to bed.

I like the pig nose montage the best.

A band called Band of Skulls

On Saturday night The Media Club was host to a little three piece out of England called Band of Skulls. For a band that has yet to release its first album, they sounded really, really tight. They rocked that little venue in the strictest sense and really looked like they were having fun. Oh, and their bassist is a goddamn amazon:
Go check out their songs "Fires" and "Bomb" on their Myspace! Now!
